Music Theory – Answering a Given Rhythm with Claudia

In the Trinity College Grade 1 Theory Book we have a topic called Answering a Given Rhythm.  Answering a rhythm can be easy if we remember that we have a “Question” that is a set of bars given to us in the beginning and we need to create an “Answer” to the rhythm.  It can also be called the Call-and-Response and it is a certain style of musical writing that can make music sound interesting and keep it flowing.

The most important to remember when Answering a Given Rhythm for Grade 1 is:

  1. Look at the Time Signature
  2. Write the biggest note for the Time Signature in the last bar
  3. Borrow from the original rhythm but don’t copy it exactly.  Write the notes in the bar that it left.
